Former WBC World Flyweight Champion Antonio Avelar (Mexico) has passed away.
The exact circumstances of his death are not yet known, but WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman expressed his condolences yesterday. Avelar was 66 years old. He was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and compiled a professional record of 39 wins (32 by knockout), 13 losses, and 1 draw.
Avelar began his professional boxing career in April 1975. Although he suffered defeats to fellow Mexican fighters such as Freddy Castillo and Gabriel Bernal, he steadily climbed the rankings.
In February 1979, he made his first challenge for the WBC World Flyweight Title, which was then held by Miguel Canto (Mexico). Despite ultimately losing by decision after 15 rounds due to Canto’s superior technical skills, the fight marked Canto’s 14th successful title defense. However, the following month, Canto lost his world title to Park Chan-hee (South Korea, 17 wins, 6 KOs, 4 losses, 2 draws) in a bout held in South Korea.

After his loss to Canto, Avelar went on an impressive streak of eight consecutive victories (seven by knockout), earning the position of mandatory challenger for the WBC World Flyweight title. He then traveled to Japan as the top contender to challenge Shoji Oguma (Shin Nihon Kimura Gym, record: 38 wins, 20 KOs, 10 losses, 1 draw), who had captured the title from Park Chan-hee.
On May 12, 1981, at the Mito City Sports Arena in Ibaraki Prefecture, Avelar faced Oguma. After an intense exchange in the seventh round, Avelar knocked down Oguma with a left hook and secured a KO victory just 56 seconds into the round, claiming the world championship.
As the challenger, Avelar received a then-record purse of 15 million yen and became the world champion with eight consecutive KO victories. On August 30 of the same year, he made his first title defense in Seoul, South Korea, against Kim Tae-shik (South Korea, 17 wins, 13 KOs, 3 losses), achieving a dramatic second-round KO victory. At just 22 years old, Avelar was widely expected to dominate the division for years to come.

However, on March 20, 1982 (Japan time March 21), during his second title defense held in Tampico, Mexico, Avelar was caught by a left hook from Prudencio Cardona (Colombia, 39 wins, 27 KOs, 23 losses, 1 draw) in the first round. He collapsed face-first to the canvas without any response, suffering a devastating knockout loss and relinquishing his title.
After moving up in weight and returning to the ring, Avelar faced Gilberto Roman (Mexico), the former WBC super flyweight champion who had made 11 successful title defenses. They fought twice, with each boxer securing one victory.
Avelar also defeated future three-division world champion Wilfredo Vazquez (Puerto Rico), winning by TKO in the eighth round.
On July 25, 1987 (Japan time July 26), Avelar challenged the undefeated WBC bantamweight champion Miguel "Happy" Lora (Colombia), who held a 27-fight winning streak at the time. Avelar was defeated by TKO in the fourth round. This bout marked the final fight of his career.
In his victory over Shoji Oguma and his impressive first title defense against Kim Tae-shik in South Korea, Avelar demonstrated overwhelming dominance, leaving a lasting impression. However, the shocking knockout loss to Cardona became an unforgettable moment.
