Kyosuke Takami, ranked No. 1 by the WBA at light flyweight, is now closer than ever to a world title.
Kyosuke Takami, a highly anticipated 23-year-old prospect from the Teiken Gym (9 wins, 7 KOs), has risen to No. 1 in the WBA’s latest light flyweight rankings. On April 8, in a Japanese light flyweight title match, Takami completely dominated defending champion Toshiki Kawamitsu (Misako Gym, 11 wins, 7 KOs, 2 losses), who held world rankings of No. 3 by the WBC, No. 8 by the WBO, and No. 12 by the IBF. Takami won by TKO at 2:26 of the sixth round, capturing the Japanese championship.
Thanks to his impressive performance, Takami moved up from No. 3 in the previous world rankings, surpassing No. 2 Alvin Jon Pasiones (Philippines, residing in Vietnam, 10 wins, 5 KOs) to claim the previously vacant No. 1 position.
The current WBA light flyweight world champion is Erick Rosa (Dominican Republic, 8 wins, 2 KOs). On December 19, 2023 (Japan time December 20), Rosa won a 12-round decision against No. 3 ranked Neyder Valdez (Mexico, 14 wins, 11 KOs, 2 losses, 2 draws) in a title fight held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to become the new champion.
The 25-year-old Rosa won the WBA interim minimumweight title in just his fourth professional bout. In his fifth fight, he captured the full championship by earning a split decision victory over Vic Saludar (Philippines, 26 wins, 16 KOs, 6 losses).
However, since winning the world title, Rosa’s fight schedule has remained unclear. On March 13 at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, he was defeated by Shokichi Iwata (Teiken Gym, 13 wins, 9 KOs, 2 losses) via a 12-round decision, crowning Iwata as the new world champion. Currently, René Santiago (Puerto Rico, 14 wins, 9 KOs, 4 losses) has issued a challenge to Rosa for a unification bout.
As the fastest boxer in Dominican Republic history to become a two-division world champion, Rosa is a 160 cm tall southpaw, known for his speed and skill, though he lacks knockout power. In his fight against Sardar held in his home country, he endured a back-and-forth battle with knockdowns exchanged. At the start of the bout, two neutral judges failed to arrive on time, forcing Sardar’s team to reluctantly accept Dominican judges.
This situation favored Rosa. The scores were 113-112 for Rosa by Luis Pabón (Puerto Rico, also serving as supervisor), 113-112 for Sardar by Reyna Urbaez (Venezuela), and 116-109 for Rosa by Oscar Perez (Dominican Republic), resulting in Rosa’s victory. Sardar also suffered a controversial knockdown ruling during the fight, contributing to his defeat.
In his fight last April against Yudel Reyes (Mexico, 16 wins, 6 KOs, 4 losses), ranked No. 10 by the IBF at minimumweight, Rosa showed signs of fatigue in the later rounds and was repeatedly hit by Reyes. Similarly, in his bout with Valdez, Rosa lost momentum in the final stages, raising concerns about his stamina and durability.
Since capturing the title, Rosa has yet to make a title defense and is likely to be ordered by the WBA to face the No. 1 ranked challenger Hyosuke Takami. After Takami won the Japanese title, Akihiko Honda, president of the Teiken Gym, stated, "He’s the most talented champion we’ve had in years. His world ranking is high, and he’s ready for a world title fight at any time." The boxing community is now watching closely to see how the situation will develop.
