46-year-old former six-division world champion Manny Pacquiao (Philippines, 62 wins, 39 KOs, 8 losses, 2 draws) will return to the ring. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman revealed to the media that Pacquiao will challenge Mario Barrios (USA, 29 wins, 18 KOs, 2 losses, 1 draw) for the WBC World Welterweight (147 lbs) title in July.

The fight is expected to take place on July 19 (Japan time July 20) or July 26 (Japan time July 27) as the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card. The venue is expected to be either Las Vegas or San Antonio, Texas. The event will be available for free streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Rumors of Pacquiao’s comeback and his challenge for Barrios’ title had been circulating since last year, and it has now been confirmed that the fight will soon become a reality.

In August 2021, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Manny Pacquiao challenged Yordenis Ugas (Cuba) for the WBA Super World Welterweight title but was defeated by decision after 12 rounds. After that fight, Pacquiao announced his retirement. However, in September last year, it was revealed that negotiations were underway for a fight with Mario Barrios, and WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman approved the bout as a world title fight.

Pacquiao stated, "At 40, I defeated Keith Thurman and made history. Now, at 45, I want to make history again," showing strong determination. Barrios, accepting the challenge, also expressed excitement: "Pacquiao is someone I’ve admired since childhood. He is a future Hall of Fame legend. Sharing the ring with him is an honor and a dream come true. I’m very excited."

After the planned fight with Pacquiao fell through last year, Barrios faced Abel Ramos (USA, ranked No. 8, 28 wins, 22 KOs, 6 losses, 3 draws) on November 15 (Japan time November 16) at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Despite being the heavy favorite, both fighters scored knockdowns, and the bout ended in a 12-round draw. Barrios has not fought since then.

Now, at 46, Pacquiao is set to return to the ring and immediately challenge for a world title. Whether this fight will truly come to fruition remains to be seen and is drawing considerable attention.
