Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing has announced that Andy Cruz (Cuba), ranked No. 3 by the IBF in the lightweight division with a record of 5 wins (2 KOs) and no losses, will participate in an IBF world lightweight title eliminator.
His opponent will be Daiki Miyadai (Yokohama Hikari Gym), ranked No. 6, with a record of 17 wins (6 KOs), 1 loss, and 1 draw. The fight is being negotiated to be held in the United States in June or July as part of a Matchroom Boxing event.

The current IBF world lightweight champion is Vasiliy Lomachenko (Ukraine), who claimed the vacant title on May 12, 2023, at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia, by defeating George Kambosos Jr. (Australia) via TKO at 2:49 of the 11th round. However, Lomachenko has since announced a break from competition in 2024 "to spend more time with his family" and has not yet shared any specific plans for his return to the ring.

The IBF has announced that it will hold an interim world lightweight title fight. On May 10 (Japan time May 11), at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California, Zaur Abdullaev (Russia, ranked No. 2 with 20 wins, 12 KOs, and 1 loss; No. 1 vacant) will face Raymond Muratalla (USA, ranked No. 4, 22 wins, 17 KOs, undefeated).

Andy Cruz, the Tokyo Olympic lightweight gold medalist, signed a promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing and made his professional debut on July 15, 2023 (Japan time July 16) in Detroit, Michigan, defeating Mexico’s Juan Carlos Burgos (35 wins, 21 KOs, 8 losses, 3 draws) by a 10-round decision to capture the IBF International Lightweight Title.

Cruz has since secured additional victories. In his most recent bout, on January 25 (Japan time January 26) at The Cosmopolitan, The Chelsea in Las Vegas, he won a wide 10-round decision over Omar Salcido (Mexico, 20 wins, 14 KOs, 2 losses), who was ranked No. 12 by the WBA at lightweight.

There were earlier rumors that Cruz would face Maxi Hughes (UK, WBA world No. 4, 28 wins, 6 KOs, 7 losses, 2 draws), also promoted by Eddie Hearn, for the WBA interim lightweight title. However, that fight did not materialize, and Cruz has now set his sights on the IBF world title.
Hughes is instead scheduled to face Archie Sharp (UK, WBO super featherweight No. 11, 25 wins, 9 KOs, 1 loss) on May 23 (Japan time May 24) at the Eco-Power Stadium in Doncaster, England.

Daiki Miyadai vacated his Japanese lightweight title in March to "take the next step," stating, "I want to make 2025 my decisive year." For Miyadai, this fight represents a major opportunity to earn his long-awaited shot at a world title. An official announcement is pending.
