This will be a rematch of their previous fight held on December 21 last year at the Twin Messe in Shizuoka, Japan. In the first bout, Garcia applied pressure from the start, throwing aggressive punches and using hooks to the head and body from all angles. Calixto relied mainly on countering with his right hand on the inside. The fight went the full 12 rounds.
Although Garcia appeared to have the upper hand in terms of aggression, punch volume, and accuracy, the official scorecards read: 118-110 for Garcia, 116-112 for Calixto, and 114-114 draw, resulting in no new champion being crowned. Afterward, the IBF ordered an immediate rematch.
